How to Configure the Kenai Theme



What It Is

The Kenai Moodle theme is a great way to obtain a nicely structured frontpage to advertise course offerings. You can include:


  • Top graphic

    • A video banner (gif or mp4)

    • Slider images (manual/automatic carousel with image and text)

  • A welcome section

  • Industry-specific navigation option

  • Featured/Trending Items

    • Courses

    • Programs

    • Custom Items

  • Certification Advertisement

How to Configure the Theme

  1. Click Site Admin and then Front Page Settings

  2. Verify that the site frontpage only includes Full site name and/or Short name for the site. Other settings will be on the theme frontpage if applied.

  3. Set Site Home to be available on the site by navigating to Site AdminAppearanceNavigation and set start page for users to Site.

  4. Navigate to Site AdminAppearance, and set theme to Kenai.

  5. Important Note: Navigate to the URL of your site with “/course/” at the end to turn on the appropriate filter fields in course/program settings specific to this theme.

    1. Example: Visit themekenai.unhosting.site/course/

  6. Start customizing the theme by visiting Site AdminAppearanceKenai Catalog - Front Page Settings.

    1. There are ! for required items and ? for more information related to each field.

  7. When creating/editing courses and programs, you will now see additional options to create filters. You can then use the URL of your site with /course/ at the end with the filters to obtain direct URLs to use in the Front Page Settings.

  8. Please note that the first category filter is the list of categories available on your site.

  9. If you want to adjust the language pack for the theme for your specific use case, you can edit the language by visiting Site AdminLanguage, then Language Customization, and search for “theme_kenai” strings.
