Site Migration Summary

For Moodle to Moodle or Moodle to Moodle Workplace migrations

Overview and Example Timeline

The team behind you

  • Included with your migration is a team of experts who are looking out for your best interests.

    • You will have a dedicated DevOps representative who is skilled at all of the technical requirements involved in a site migration.

    • You will have an experienced Learning Designer who not only intimately understands Moodle at an advanced level, but who is equipped to manage the varied aspects of your project and keep communication clear and efficient.

Planning

  • Your migration team will want to know the various stakeholders involved in the project. We’ll get to know you, your staff, your use of Moodle, and your preferred timeline.

  • Together we will identify key objectives, confirm project components, gather details on your use of plugins or needs for integrations, and fully prepare for our next steps.

  • In this phase you can expect a lot of planning, process refinement, scope confirmation, and schedule management.

  • This is a good time to clean up any bloat in your Moodle site. Give thought to whether you need to slim down on course count, user count, or if you need to strategize in the way you design. Media content is a common offender for surprising site size.

Test run/ test migration of your site

  • Once we have determined the optimal way to transfer your data to our infrastructure, we will proceed with the test migration. Typically, we request command-line server admin access, as this significantly accelerates the process.

Testing phase

  • You’ll be in the driver’s seat for testing out your migrated site, paying close attention to the functionality of your preferred integrations, reviewing your content, walking through common steps and processes completed by your end users, and generally reviewing the site for all necessary functionality.
  • Don’t worry! We provide documentation for you, including but not limited to, a guide for testing your migrated site and a checklist of tasks unique to you.
  • Last, you can expect to have opportunities to meet with Moodle staff to go over questions, processes, and concerns before the next phase of your project.

Final migration

  • Once the test migration is approved, we then schedule the final migration at an agreeable time with a focus on minimal interruption to your users.
  • We do this during the business week to have a full staff available for support.
    • Note: Migrations do not begin on a Friday.
  • This phase includes URL and SSL changes as well as the finalization of your Moodle email setup. Please think about what you want your final URL to be. (It can be the same as it currently is on your live site.) If you need a new one, we recommend a subdomain such as “learn.mydomain.com”.
